A chef who discovered a passion for photography, watching documentaries on TV, playing with photos till you find something you like, and letting your imagination flow. This week we meet Simion Marian (silent47) from PhotoDune.
If you’re an Envato marketplace author and would like to be interviewed for the blog, head over to this form. We’d love to hear from you.
Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from, what do you do for a living?
My name is Marian Simion (silent47) and I’m from Galati, a small town in Romania. For a long period of time I worked as a chef, but about two years ago a passion for photography got me, and now I’m freelance photographer.
Which marketplaces do you belong to? What types of files do you sell?
I sell my work on PhotoDune and I sell mostly business photos. I love to do compositions.
How did you get started? Have you had any formal training?
I started by learning on my own. I experienced all sorts of ideas first year until I found a niche that I liked. I had no professional training.
Describe your home workspace.
My workspace is simple: a laptop and a full HD monitor.
Describe your creative process. What steps do you normally follow to create your files?
Usually I don’t plan anything. I just play with photos until I get something that I like. I usually have just an idea of what I want to do.
What is your advice to other authors regarding how to create a successful portfolio?
My advice is to let their imagination flow, along with any ideas they have. This can result in very nice photos that sell.
What do you do to market your files?
Almost nothing. I usually get lucky and my photos get in lightboxes and collections, and this helps me a lot in this business.
What are your three favorite files, and why do you like them?
My favorite files are:
I love this photo because it’s simple and useful for any online business.
I love this picture because it illustrates very well the terrible things that happen in the world. Even right now.
This image makes me think of the fact that i can do anything. Freedom to choose and to feel how I want.
Apart from yourself, who is your favorite marketplace author, and why do you like them?
I have many favorite authors. In particular I really like ollyi. I love his work because he puts many good ideas into practice with some very successful compositions.
What do you do in your spare time?
In my spare time I watch many documentaries and play on my PS3 game console.
