Author Interview: Imaginem

Today we meet Mondre (Imaginem) from ThemeForest.

Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from, what do you do for a living?

Hi, I’m Mondre, married to wife Aalia and father to two kids, Mikael and Michelle.

I’m from Maldives. For those who haven’t heard it’s a lot of islands and a popular holiday destination. I grew up in Maale’, the capital island which is in about the center of the chain. Its five square kilometers – quiet a small place but busy and dense as it’s the commercial heart of the country.

Great to say that I’m a full time Envato author, making a living with what I love doing.

Which marketplaces do you belong to? What types of files do you sell?

Currently I sell CSS and WordPress themes at ThemeForest. I hope to sell at CodeCanyon too when i get more time for it.

How did you get started? Have you had any formal training?

Writing small programs in QBasic, making random circles and lines in multiple colors was the start. That was a long time back. My first website was designed on Geocities. I haven’t stopped since then.

I’ve had formal training in e-commerce and IT.

Describe your home workspace.

Wacom Bamboo tablet and Logitech Performance MX as tools. Here’s a photo.

Describe your creative process. What steps do you normally follow to create your files?

I do sketches on pieces of paper. These don’t really materialize to actual designs. I keep the papers unorganized in my drawer and refer to them from time to time. It’d be Photoshop layouts first. I redo the layouts until I feel comfortable with working on them with CSS and HTML.

What is your advice to other authors regarding how to create a successful portfolio?

For me it has been the discipline to not be distracted and keep working on a design until you’re satisfied with it. It’s a simple formula for good results.

What do you do to market your files?

I don’t really market my items. This is why i think Envato is doing a superb job.

What are your three favorite files, and why do you like them?

Photo Nexus – Simplicity.

Studio Box – Features.

Echoes WP – Easily Extentable.

Apart from yourself, who is your favorite marketplace author, and why do you like them?

There are so many authors who i’d like to mention and picking one would be a challenge.
Maximus, Epicera, Kriesi, Cudazi, FreshFace, Parallelus and DDStudios. Just a few from the top of my head.

What do you do in your spare time?

I love being with family, reading, watching movies, taking photos and listening to music. Here’s a photo of my two kids Mikael and Michelle.

Geocities was my first website too! It was great, they had the visual designer, but they also had the “advanced” editor where you could edit HTML – that’s where I started to learn to code!
